Our Story

For 140 years, Thibaut has served designers in their quest to transform their clients’ homes.

1886
Richard E. Thibaut, aged 29, opens Thibaut's doors on New York City's Madison Avenue the same year the Statue of Liberty first graced the New York harbor. The founder's mission was to provide "the choicest colorings and designs, which unsurpassed any line of wallpapers offered." Today, the brand remains the oldest wallpaper company in the United States.
1889
Richard E. Thibaut and his staff opened the brand's first retail storefront in New York City, located at 23 Great Jones St., the same year Coca-Cola's secret formula was bought by its future founder in Atlanta, GA.
1911
Prior to the invention of the delivery truck, Thibaut delivered wallpaper by horse and buggy.
1932
Thibaut, featured in House & Garden's "The Beauty of Thibaut Wallpaper," provided a small antidote to the woes of the Great Depression.
1966
Thibaut murals gain immense popularity in American homes. Ships Haven, Memory Lane, and Magnolia Hill are among the most recognizable. President Lyndon B. Johnson addressed the nation on TV from his Texas ranch, with Memory Lane on the wall behind him.

2024

Thibaut launched the Coalition for Advocacy and Understanding of Sustainable Excellence (CAUSE), uniting teams across the organization to champion transparency, accountability, and continuous progress, ensuring every decision reflects our commitment to the planet and future generations.

2025

Thibaut unveils a new Manhattan flagship showroom at the New York Design Center. Thoughtfully designed in collaboration with interior designer and architect David Frasier, the space debuts a new showroom concept, one that showcases the evolution and meaningful presentation from our expanding portfolio of brands.

A Vintage Revival

Woven into History

Say yes to the dress, especially when your design studio thinks it can make for a striking indoor/outdoor performance fabric. Go into our archives to learn how Botanica was inspired by the character of an antique dress and reimagined in a fresh new composition.

A Vintage Revival

Preserving signature details, such as the cactus, our team rebalanced the layout of the antique dress and added further botanical elements to our performance fabric. The color placement was inverted with white motifs on a colored ground for greater visual impact, while the weave structure was carefully considered and adjusted to create a more refined look.

A New Insignia, Rooted in History

Our commemorative insignia is inspired by an original hand-drawn Richard E. Thibaut cipher from the 1920s and reimagined to honor our 140-year heritage. The original logo was found as an emboss on a wallpaper book in our archives.
